I am designing an exhibition that will have a limb from a tree as part of the display. Does anyone have any experience about how to make sure that the tree will be preserved and free from insects and decay?

Hi Richard, Apart from soaking the limb in insecticide - which is only going to remove external insects, not any larvae or eggs. I suggest having a replica made - we did this at the Hills Forest Discovery Centre (Perth) of an entire tree trunk - latex mould is taken of the branch, polyurethane positive made from mould and then coloured to match with paint - will last forever so long as it is not subjected to weather and can be touch up painted at any time. Thanks Annie. It does sound a good solution, but I don't think I will have the budget for doing a replica. I have been told by an arborist that if the tree is healthy and freshly cut then it should be free of burrowing insects and you just have to guard against it drying out and the bark cracking by varnishing it. Once again, thanks for the suggestion. Richard
