Biography
Interpretation has been my life’s work. I so thoroughly enjoyed a summer seasonal interpretive position at “The Prom” in my final university year in the ‘70s, I knew this was my long term path – sharing the joy of our heritage with others.
My involvement with Interpretation Australia began with the inaugural Melbourne conference in 1992. I was briefly a State Chapter rep (Qld), and later newsletter editor and Secretary, each for 3 years and have just retired as President of Interpretation Australia.
I am committed to Interpretation Australia as an organisation inspiring excellence in interpretation, and linking people involved in interpreting natural and cultural heritage.
Following uni and an interlude of six years in secondary teaching, I returned to interpretation with the (then) Victorian Parks Service in 1984 to manage the state-wide park face-to-face interpretive programs. I coordinated a handbook for delivering interpretive programs – its foundations remain in its recent revision.
Sea change called in 1994 to Queensland’s Parks and Wildlife Service Great Sandy area. Here we developed Fraser Island’s communication guidelines for managing visitors around dingoes, an approach recognized for its international best practice for which I was awarded an Australia Day Agency award.
Now in central Queensland since 2002, my fun-loving team manage the interpretive and communication services from the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef stretching north to the Whitsunday islands and west to the Simpson Desert. |
