Biography
I have always been an interpreter, though for the first 25 years I didn’t know it! As a qualified graphic designer working in high profile design studios, I specialised in brand image design for major national corporations and wine clients. I then co-founded Designhaus and, prompted by a deep personal interest in history and the natural sciences, began to specialise in planning, writing and designing interpretation programs for zoos, botanic gardens, museums, historic sites and national parks. Eventually I discovered Interpretation Australia and I’ve been ‘an interpreter’ ever since.
The crossover from brand to interpretation design is a natural one since both disciplines are all about effective communication and making the complex simple. But the designer can also provide the strategic approach and consistency that’s so often missing in interpretation and is crucial to its success.
At Designhaus I specialise in helping organisations become more visible, more influential and more profitable. By using a strategic approach to managing brand, interpretation and marketing, I help organisations create new and exciting business opportunities.
I also operate an award-winning tourism business (www.yondah.com) in South Australia. And I have lectured in both design and interpretation at the University of SA and Flinders University, conducted professional workshops and served as an invited member of both the Adelaide Zoo Interpretation Committee and Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden Reference Group.
My Interpretation Australia highlights have included chairing the 2008 IA Conference Program Committee, judging the 2008 IA Awards, winning the IA Best of Excellent Commendation award in 2007 and serving as IA Vice President since November 2008. |
