Free workshop at the new Sustainability Discovery Centre!
Date: Thursday 28 July
Time: 11:30 am to 4:00 pm
Location: Sustainability Discovery Centre, Sunshine Coast TAFE, 34 Lady Musgrave Drive, Mooloolaba, QLD
We had 16 participants who were a range of IA members and guests (from interpretive / education centres around the Sunshine Coast). We were also joined by 7 TAFE students who are studying interpretation through a tourism course they are doing. The half day workshop started with exploring the very new (and not quite all finished) Sustainability Discovery Centre, a lovely lunch at the TAFE bistro, a round table discussion about the new centre and then ended with a session about how the setting in an interpretive centre influences visitors emotional responses.
We were lucky enough to have Associate Professor Bill Carter (Heritage Resource Management – University of the Sunshine Coast) , Associate Professor Christian Jones (Interactive DigiMedia – University of the Sunshine Coast) and Todd Estey (from Iglobe in the USA www.theiglobe.com) join Sonia Marshall for facilitation of the workshop sessions. Participants left the workshop with tools for assessing the settings in their interpretive centres to determine influences on emotional responses, an invitation to become a member of IA (from Georgie Bull – QLD Chapter IA rep) and opportunity to collaborate in future projects with the new Sustainability Discovery Centre (which is a government funded community asset).
The picture shows Louise Ralph (IA member) and Sandra Makaresz, both from Dragon Fly Inc – creative communication, experiencing one of the exhibits in the Sustainability Discovery Centre.
